Establishing Our Governance: Building YVL UNITED

A union is only as strong as the members who step up to lead it. As we move forward under our first Collective Bargaining Agreement, we are transitioning from an organizing committee into a Member-Led Governance.

This is our opportunity to ensure that the voices of every branch, every department, and every seniority level are heard.

The Shop Steward is the most important role in our organization. You are the first line of defense for your colleagues and the “face” of the union in your workplace.

• Protect the Contract: You help coworkers understand their rights under the CBA.
• Be a Witness: You attend “Weingarten” meetings to ensure management follows the rules.
• Problem Solve: You work to resolve issues at the lowest level before they become formal grievances.
• Build Solidarity: You keep your branch informed and united.

We are currently looking for volunteers across all YVL locations who are:

1. **Approachable:** Someone coworkers feel comfortable talking to.
2. **Detail-Oriented:** Someone who likes to have the "receipts" and knows the contract.
3. **Fair:** Someone who stands up for what is right, regardless of personal feelings.

To ensure our union is truly democratic, we are preparing for our first formal leadership elections. We will be establishing a structure that includes:

• The Executive Board: To oversee the general strategy and finances of the Local.
• The Bargaining Committee: To represent us in future contract negotiations.
• The Steward Council: A network of leaders across all branches to ensure no member is left to stand alone.

• Step 1: Information Sessions. We will be hosting virtual and in-person “Town Halls” to discuss these roles in detail.
• Step 2: Nominations. Members in good standing will be able to nominate themselves or a peer for leadership positions.
• Step 3: Secure Voting. A fair and confidential election process will be held to seat our first official board.

We are building this from the ground up. You don't need “years of experience” in labor law to lead—you only need a commitment to your coworkers and a belief in fairness.
